Everyone has a favorite sweater. This is mine. Does it flatter me? Probably not. Do the stripes make me feel happy? Indeedy.
Stuff.
Have you ever gone through your bookmarks and been absolutely perplexed by what you find? I'm sure that at one time in my life, in the not so distant past, I understood why I found it important enough to save a page with the lyrics of Olivia Newton John's "I Honestly Love You", but damned if I know why now. Likewise, "Slip Sliding Away", a terribly sad song I happen to love (do you know the words? Have a read:
Slip sliding away, slip sliding away
You know the nearer your destination, the more you slip sliding away
Whoa and I know a man, he came from my hometown
He wore his passion for his woman like a thorny crown
He said Dolores, I live in fear
My love for you's so overpowering, I'm afraid that I will disappearSlip sliding away, slip sliding away
You know the nearer your destination, the more you slip sliding awayI know a woman, who became a wife
These are the very words she uses to describe her life
She said a good day ain't got no rain
She said a bad day is when I lie in the bed
And I think of things that might have beenSlip sliding away, slip sliding away
You know the nearer your destination, the more you slip sliding awayAnd I know a father who had a son
He longed to tell him all the reasons for the things he'd done
He came a long way just to explain
He kissed his boy as he lay sleeping
Then he turned around and he headed home againSlip sliding away, slip sliding away
You know the nearer your destination, the more you slip sliding awayWhoa God only knows, God makes his plan
The information's unavailable to the mortal man
We're workin' our jobs, collect our pay
Believe we're gliding down the highway, when in fact we're slip sliding away)
That's a sad song, but I can't imagine why I'd bookmark it so that I'm constantly able to call it up to give it a read. In fact, I can't think of when or why I thought that I'd need to have those, and Olivia's, lyrics at my fingertips.
I have the page for Zappos shoes bookmarked, too, and I have for at least 3 years. Do you know when I bought shoes from Zappos? If you guessed NEVER, because I wouldn't buy shoes off the net, you're correct.
Journals I don't read, bands I don't remember ever seeing, jokes I don't find funny anymore (note: I actually still find this really funny). Pages that don't exist, local weather for places I haven't visited in years--these are the bookmarks I keep. No idea why.
I'm pretty sure I don't have anything terribly deep to say about my bookmarks. Maybe just that there's a lot of crap out there (and I hope you all noticed that I'm taking the moral high road and not including to journals I think are crap) and eventually, if it's crappy enough, I'll find it. So there you go.
